On-air all star

“A good radio host is someone who is honest,” says Karson and Kennedy radio host Kennedy Elsey. “You can be funny, outspoken, shocking, angry — anyone can do that — but it is the person who brings their REAL self to the microphone that will make radio that is worth listening to. Radio is a tough, crazy, illogical business. You live and die by the numbers. Which is tough. I see many larger companies getting rid of local talent and syndicating everything. It’s really sad. I believe the one thing we have in radio is our ability to touch people locally. To be a part of the community. To share the same concerns to talk about the same issues. I’m so thankful that CBS believes in this policy of live and local radio.”

RadioHead

“I got really lucky getting into radio,” says Karson and Kennedy radio host Kennedy Elsey. “Karson found me on a stage in NC and pushed me and the boss until they gave me a chance. I would suggest starting with an internship or working the street team for the station you want to work for. Our technical director is a former street teamer, and the new Amp party girl on our sister station started as our intern. Just learn everything — even things that aren’t in your immediate job description. If you are the only one who knows how to do something, and you don't complain about it, you are harder to let go.”

How to be a good host

“I didn’t go to school to be in radio,” says Karson and Kennedy radio host Kennedy Elsey. “I was a theater major. However, any class that puts you in front of people, that encourages you to speak in front of others, to speak your mind, or encourages you to make interesting debate will be helpful in developing your on-air personality.”

DJ MVPs

“My favorite personalities are all women,” says Karson and Kennedy radio host Kennedy Elsey. “I am a huge fan of Sheri Lynch from Charlotte, Dana DiDonato from Long Island, and Corey Foley out of Houston. These are three very strong women who lead their shows. It's very rare in radio to see a woman in the lead role, and I listen and learn from these women as often as I can.”

Two years ago, Kennedy Elsey was a different girl. Sure, she hosted a top-rated radio show. And yeah, she was a known name. But off-air, she had some questions. She was turning 40 on March 25th, and what had she really accomplished?

So this is what she did:

1. Ran the Boston Marathon

2. Skydived

3. Walked on fire

4. Lost 25 pounds

5. Rappelled down a 22-story building

6. Swam with dolphins

7. Shot a machine gun

Meet Kennedy Elsey 2.0, a woman hell-bent on facing fear. And if you listen to her and her co-host Karson on their show, Karson and Kennedy on Mix 104.1, you will quickly see that she plans on helping you confront a few issues, too. Need to lose weight? You can do it! Lacking a love life? Until you meet l'amour, learn how to be alone! Most of all, she wants you to stop being scared to try new things. The fact that she ever struggled in that department that may sound funny if you know her seemingly less-than-risk-averse history. In a nutshell: after growing up with her single mom, two sisters, half-sister, stepsister, and stepbrother, she married her military-bound college sweetheart, moved to Germany, performed musical theater, met Karson in North Carolina, fell into radio, got divorced, partnered with Karson in a hit radio show, and moved from Memphis to Boston after getting picked up by MIX 104.1. Phew! But here's the thing: at age 39.9, she felt as though life was something happening to her instead of something she made happen. And so began the adventures, all to prove that she can do anything. And so can you. She's looking to ice climb and bungee next — any takers?
