 An interview with BFW Founder Jay Calderin
Here's the skinny on the who, what and where of Boston Fashion Week, headquartered at The Tent at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Boston, 776 Boylston Street in Boston's Back Bay.
Tell us about Boston Fashion Week. How did it start? What is its purpose? "It all began in 1995 when I reached out to local fashion professionals about coordinating our efforts to get the attention of the press as well as the public. The idea was to work as a community in a really grassroots way, being very conscious not to be a cookie-cutter version of a fashion week. Over the years, Boston Fashion Week was evolved with the changing fashion scene, which I'm very excited to say is still experiencing a true renaissance — The Tent, Boston Fashion Week’s glamorous new venue, is a perfect example of that. Everyone from student designers to established professionals can show, providing something for everyone who wants to celebrate Boston's annual celebration of style." What should we see? There are so many events! "It all depends on your interests. There are exhibits, educational events, shows, parties, and lots of shopping and pampering going on. I always like to attend a diverse mix of things to keep it interesting." Can you recommend any must-see shows for the first-timer? How about the veteran? “For anyone new to the scene, the social events provide great opportunities to interact with fashion professionals and fellow fashionistas. Of course, I believe all the shows will be great, but becoming familiar with new designers, who might be more accessible, could be an ideal way to introduce yourself to Boston Fashion Week.” “For those of us who’ve been around for a while, chances are we already know which shows we’ll be attending, so I’d suggest taking advantage of the offers on the Boston Fashion Trail. Some of the spa services are looking really good to me right about now.” This year's Boston Fashion Week is bigger and bolder than ever. Is everything open to the public? “Technically the answer to that is yes, but a fair amount of events are by invitation only, and access to those events depends on whether or not you’ve reached out to designers and started to build relationships with them — something you might want to consider starting to do now for next year! That is, after all, what it’s all about: creating community. There are, however, many free events and ones that you can purchase a ticket to.” How can we score the best seats? Are they reserved? ”Every event is different. The key is contacting the designers/event producers as early as possible. Being fashionably late may leave you all dressed up with nowhere to go.” Are kids allowed? "Fashion 101 at the Boston Public Library on Saturday, September 24th, is a great event for teens interested in a career in fashion. Each event is different, but there are some kid-friendly events. I'd suggest parents read the listings carefully, check out the designer/event websites, and see if they think they're age-appropriate. To be sure, email or call ahead." Are there any logistical details we should know about, e.g., parking discounts, pre-show receptions, etc.? We all know parking in Boston is at a premium, so get to your destination early. No discounts unfortunately. As for pre- and post-receptions/parties, those are all listed on the schedule. Anything else you think our readers might like to know? “To fully enjoy and appreciate the week, you need to take an active role in planning your schedule, your wardrobe, and even your social interactions. Mix it up on all fronts! I challenge everyone to curate and craft your Boston Fashion Week experience.”
