Entrepreneurial Team
Maybe it was the carpe diem attitude or the do-the-right-thing way of life; whatever it was, Marcel Angol knew in a single meeting that he'd found a business partner in Brendan Boyd. They were two Boston-bred kids -- Marcel of Dorchester, Brendan from Mattapan -- who both had made choices to live a "righteous life" as they like to describe it. That's code for staying away from drugs, gangs, alcohol and a one-way path to losing.
Brendan knew about loss. When he was 12, he lost his father to drugs and alcohol. At 15, his mother died and a year later, his grandmother, who had raised, him, passed away. During the day, Brendan was shipped out to Concord Carlisle High School through the Metco program. At night, he tried to understand what life had dealt him. This is what he learned: 1. Life is full of hardships. 2. You have to roll with the punches. 3. You have to live healthy. 4. You can only depend on yourself.
Sounded like the perfect start-up companion for Marcel, who had not known tragedy like Brendan, but appreciated a strong work ethic. His mother had worked as nurse, opened stores and bought land. Hard work, simple hard work, she’d tell her son, takes you places.
Together, Marcel and Brendan created Society Original Products, a clothing company of street wear: navy hats, graphic tees, brown hoodies. Clean, attractive pieces that look cool on any race, creed or color. On Society Original Product’s website: video interviews with Hip-Hop Ali, an upcoming basketball tournament sponsored by SOP (Brendan started a basketball nonprofit for inner city kids back in high school) and a philosophy about their clothing that, as they put it, “exemplifies the confidence, dignity and growth necessary for the challenges in everyday life.” Words that both young men live by.
