The Mission: Moxie
A fly on the wall could have seen it coming. It seemed innocuous enough, three women, all working in public relations, meeting for dinner. They ought to be friends, after all, or at least professional acquaintances, able to swap contacts and talk shop, that sort of thing, you know? So they met at Aujourd’hui at the Four Seasons and each looked over the menu teeming with Michelin-worthy entrees.
Let’s do the egg, Sophie said.
I just looked at that! Jo said.
It takes 90-minutes—so special! Regan said.
A 90-minute egg. At the Four Seasons. Yeah, so any fly would say, you ladies really should just move in together. No one else will ever understand your ways but, hey, who am I? I’m just a fly.
Fast forward a couple of years: Sophie Zunz, Regan Dillon and Jo Swani may not be living together but they have co-founded one of the hottest public-relations firms in the city, The Moxie Agency. One of their first events—celebrating a newly renovated Louis Vuitton boutique in Copley Place—attracted the shiniest of Boston’s glitterazzi, from Patriots players to symphony conductors, award-winning chefs to socialites. Illusionists were flown in from Paris to entertain guests at an exclusive dinner was held at the Mandarin Hotel. Just days after opening in the New Year, Moxie landed some of the most coveted accounts in town: The Liberty Hotel, Whiskey Park, Max Ultimate Foods and the home-good boutique Hudson.
Blackberry in one hand, cell phone in another, with a stroller lurking nearby, the ladies mix a Charlie’s Angels sex appeal with a Lara Croft (if she was a mom) sensibility—sass, confidence and professional experience to boot. Still, it was a leap of faith to leave their full-time, benefit-rich jobs: Sophie was the director of public relations at the Charles Hotel, Regan held the same title at the Four Seasons, and Jo, an executive at Civetta Communications. But being successful means taking risks—and taking control of your destiny, which even a fly would tell you is the only way to soar.
